There are two main political parties in the United States and these are democrat and republican.  The republican political party was formed in 1854 and it was so named due to the concern that Jeffersonian Republicans had with national interest placed above states’ rights and sectional interests.  When you look at the Republican Party today, they still continue to emphasize on traditional social values, tax cuts as well as strong national defense.  Further, they also favor business and oppose welfare.

For the various issues that the US is facing, you can see that the republicans tend to take conservative position.  They maintain that federal government shouldn’t play a big role in the lives of individuals.  For this matter, they also emphasize less government intervention when it comes to the economy and business.  Taxes should be lowered and that if the government spends on social programs that the amount they spend has to be something lower.  Essentially, republicans have political positions and ideology that covers various aspects like social policies, economic policies, environmental policies, national defense policies and so on.

In more detail with economic policies, laws that allow individual achievement and emphasize free markets are favored by republicans.  It’s the view of the Republican Party that it’s through these that economic prosperity is possible.  Under economic policies, fiscal conservatism, laissez faire economics and personal responsibility over programs for welfare are supported.  As for policies with the environment, the republicans adopted a platform that environmental protection and economic prosperity have to advance together.  In light of this, they supported the increase of federal investment for the development of alternative fuels like nuclear energy.

On the social front, one of the platforms republicans express support for is the Feral Marriage Amendment to the US Constitution.  This defined marriage being exclusive between a man and a woman.  As for gun ownership rights, republicans generally support this but oppose the laws regulating guns.  With regard to schools, members of the Republican Party insist on greater accountability for public schools.  The most popular law for this is the Act of No Child Left Behind made in 2001.

In national defense, some of the most prominent republicans like Senator John McCain opposed any kind of enhanced interrogation techniques seeing that they’re no different than torture.  Republicans support and favor a myriad of laws as long as it furthers their beliefs and ideologies like conservativism, liberalism and so on.
